Automation means the transfer of functions of the production process, especially process control tasks from humans to artificial systems. These are systems that independently follow a program and make decisions based on the program for controlling and, if necessary, regulating processes. These decisions are based on the linkage of inputs with the respective states of a system and result in tasks. Depending on the extent to which control and regulation tasks are taken over by the machine, this is referred to as partial or full automation.
Flexible manufacturing systems should not only increase productivity, but also flexibility and increase overall profitability.
Fields of application:
Automation can relate to handling and processing operations, conveying, handling and storage operations, as well as development, production planning and control operations.
